Episode 44: Soma

Feeling fresh after a week away from the studio the Lava Lava Residents Barrientos & DVRS decided, after 43 episodes over almost 2 years, it was finally time to focus in on the record label that firmly put Glasgow on the map; Soma.  Founded by the Glaswegian duo (and now institution in itself) Slam way back in 1991, they were soundtracking the house and techno sounds of the 90’s while we were still learning to walk.  Fast forward to 2014 and the Soma imprint is one of the core record labels of the UK with an eye-watering roster of artists releasing on the label such as Andrew Weatherall, Daft Punk, Gene Farris, Funk D’Void and Silicone Soul to name but a very, very few.  With a record label that’s played such a massive role in forming our tastes as we grew up, we dedicated an extra long 45 minute Label Focus to this one.

With such a big tech-oriented Label Focus, Barrientos kicked off the Residents Mix to a very mellow start with a fresh cut from none other than Floating Points.  After a few more chilled tracks, including an impressive promo through from RiCHARD.GEAR, the LAVALAVA crew took things to a smooth groove with some more smoking hot new tracks from Duke Dumont, Waifs & Strays and Huxley.

Although the number one spot for the Top 5 was a pretty easy pick with the brand new track from Magician and Years & Years on Pete Tong’s FFRR, it was a very contentious pick for the other 4 spots.  Making the cut was the fresh material from Marquis Hawkes and Brodanse as well as two outstanding remixes from Meramek and Friend Within.
