Episode 53: Ninja Tune / Iain Mac
Residents Barrientos and DVRS took a journey through the long back catalogue of diverse sounds from Ninja Tune for Episode 53 of LAVA LAVA. Founded way back in 1990 by the duo of Jonathan Moore & Matt Black (a.k.a. Coldcut), Ninja Tune was made as an outlet for the underground sounds of the UK. From it’s beginnings in hip-hop and soul to the emerging sounds of the time (grime, electro, fidget, dub and electronic) the label has managed to achieve a well-revered status with a truly eclectic mix of releases. For the journey through their discography, the LAVA LAVA residents moved from the first release by One Self through to classic tracks from Daedelus, The Qemists, Toddla T, Mr Scruff and Bonobo.
The Residents Mix followed up from the incredible Label Focus with mellow vibes from the brand new Fantastic Man track and the stunning DJ Koze remix of Mount Kimbie. Kicking things up a notch, we had a huge bag of new and exclusive tracks to play out, including amazing big cuts from Josh Butler, Let The Machines Do The Work, Erik Christiansen & Hackman.
If that wasn’t enough, Episode 53 seen the launch of our Guest Mixes series! The innaugural mix comes from the Glaswegian DJ behind La Cheetah‘s hugely successful club night Hex. Ian Mac delivers the goods with a on Guest Mix 01 with a sublime mix of house that toys with dark and edgy undertones.
