French artist Guilhem Monin christens his brand new imprint this October with four tracks of deep grooves on his ‘Social Music EP’.
Hailing from Montpellier in the south of France, Guilhem Monin is a passionate record collector, DJ and producer. He’s also the man behind the vinyl-only label Colors, which has featured Boo Williams, Stephane Ghenacia, Thomas Roland, Remi Mazet and, of course, himself.
Now based in London, Monin is spearheading the Social Joy Sunday party series at the Brewhouse (London Fields) as well as a vinyl and digital imprint sharing the same name. The label and party’s sound is inspired by the first wave of house, disco and techno.
First up on the maiden release, ‘Social Music’ is a sample driven jam featuring crowd noises, delicious bass licks and icey notes. Following up, ‘I Plan To Stay A Believer’ merges sultry chords with shuffling percussion and twinkling atmospherics to create a sophisticated groover that sounds like a genuine old school gem.
On the flip side ‘VLG’ sees the contribution of Leonardo Milano de Cuba for a lowslung and jazzy vibe featuring saxophones, moody organ melodies and an incomprehensible spoken vocal sample. Rounding the EP off in style, ‘People’ incorporates soaring synths and atmospheric pads for an upbeat dancefloor cut steeped in a seminal late 80’s Detroit style.
Guilhem’s inaugural ‘Social Music’ EP drops on Social Joy on 31st October 2016 and is bound to make some waves.
