STREAM: Qwestlife – ll

Since the Parisian producer Tom Laroye teamed up with London-based producer and label owner Yam Who? under the moniker Qwestlife they have gained international acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Theo Parrish and Greg Wilson to name but a few.  Their debut release last year showcased a sound that blended old school disco, house, hip-hop and 80’s synth pop to deliver three tracks that were rinsed on dancefloors the world over.

Set for release later this month, the new Qwestlife II EP contains 2 new jams ‘Give Me A Minute‘ & ‘What You Like‘ as well as two remixes of ‘Don’t Break My Heart‘ from Russian producers Geonis & Meir and Yam.  For this release, Qwestlife enlisted the vocal talent of American Stonesthrow Records rapper Wildchild and the stunning voice of Lola.

Give Me A Minute‘ kicks the EP off with an electronic and balearic vibe from the plucked guitar, twitching bass and classic rhodes keys.  The vocals and percussion give the track a modern disco flair that make this one likely to be a summer festival favourite.  Following up is the team-up of Wildchild & Lola on the sunset cut ‘What You Like‘.  The vocal duo bounce off each other throughout the track perfectly while echoing italo-disco synths and atmospherics meet a classic funk bassline and string samples to create a truly subtle blend of genres.

The two remixes of ‘Don’t Break My Heart‘ that close off the EP are nothing less than delicious slabs of dancefloor magicGeonis & Meir take the original back to a classic Alan Braxe style house cut, utilising guitar licks and punchy drums to give an infectious groove.  Rounding off the release, label-owner Yam Who? kicks the BPM up a notch, adding more energy with plenty of synths and sweeping atmospherics, delivering a real dancefloor-focussed piece of funk.

Make sure you pick up a copy of the 4-track ‘Qwestlife II EP‘ when it drops on ISM Records later this month.  The perfect accompaniement to those long sun-drenched afternoons.
